Biomet: surgical kit for prothesis

When business model, function and form are one

It is said that “the clothe makes the man”; it is a way to refer to an excellence circle, when all the actors of a process feed back for its improvement.

Medicine and surgery in particular are a great excellence circle; generally investigations and improvements end up resulting in “better practices” of a whole group.

Our client, Biomet, is a company specialized in prothesis and biomedical implants’ manufacture, especially of hip and column. This is a field where the excellence circles are basic: In order to achieve a high level of excellence, it is necessary to have good products, good processes, an excellent operation team and a business model that facilitates their use, minting the operation correctly for each actor who takes part in the process.

In some cases, the excellence of an operation team that incorporates new and particular practices in the processes, achieves a particularly high percentage of successful operations. These cases receive special attention by industry and in particular by our client.

The project called “surgical operation kit for hip prothesis”, starts from here and goes up to the business model. Once an excellent practice of a particular team is detected, engineers and ergonomists from the Competitive Design Network (CDN) attend the prosthesis operations, with the aim of creating an operation protocol so that it can be copied by other surgical teams.

Once CDN has assimilated the surgical step by step and once the use of generic and particular instruments has been analyzed, a process of definition, design and development of specific instruments begins that picks up the operation protocol, adjusts it step by step, adapts especially to our client’s developed prothesis, fitting it to a global business model to be used.

Obviously the definition process of a new instrument is a very sophisticated condensation of routine, physical ergonomics and identification of sophisticated and advanced materials as well as productive processes adapted to reduced series.

Another difficulty is the actual surgical process. When a patient is going to be operated, the total casuistry with which the doctors are going to operate, is not known: the patient’s condition, the development and incidences during the process, the dimensions and ergonomic percentiles, etc.

It is at this moment, where the Loop Business Innovation team gets the CDN information starting a study of the process and the following steps result from the moment a surgical operation is defined until it is done (specific needs of product stock, generic and specific packaging, sterilizations, products and processes asepses, unexpected casuistries, etc.)

The minting process of all the chain that takes part in an operation (material and/or services suppliers, medical equipment, hospitals, mutualists, social security, etc.) is also studied.

The result of all this is condensed in a “surgical operation kit for hip prothesis”; this kit or “box” contains all the products, tools and prothesis to be used in an operation, including all the possible carvings, elements to be consumed, etc.

At the time of the operation, the surgical team receives the kit according to the programmed utilization. Once the operation ended, the doctors give the client back the kit for its spare parts, asepsis and sterilization. The minting process is undertaken paying a rental for the use of the kit and its services, such as the specific payment of the consumables and the prothesis used.

Without doubt, an excellent example of integration of business model, function and forms, carried out by the client and CDN and Loop team.
